EDF Renewables Ireland on Thursday announced a deal to supply the Irish network of fuel retailer Circle K with electricity from 17 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) parks.

The French arm of France’s EDF Renewables has signed a corporate power purchase agreement (cPPA) that covers all 168 locations of the forecourt and convenience retailer in Ireland. In addition, Circle K will use the electricity to power its electric vehicle charging network, which consists of 44 service stations across the country.

Power supplies under the contract will last 12 years, starting in October 2024 and ending in 2036.

EDF Renewables will source the electricity from three of its solar farms in Wexford and Kilkenny, namely Blusheens, Coolroe and Curraghmartin. The plants were energised in March last year.

“As Ireland moves towards net-zero, cPPAs will play an increasingly significant role in driving the clean energy transition and providing an important route to market for renewable energy projects,” said Ryanne Burges, director for offshore and Ireland at EDF Renewables UK and Ireland.

According to the statement, Circle K is the first forecourt and convenience retailer in Ireland to use locally-produced renewable power for its domestic network.
