EEP says backed 280 small-scale clean energy projects in Central America

Jun 26, 2014 - The Energy and Environment Partnership with Central America (EEP) has helped develop some 280 small-scale renewable energy projects in the region with seed funding of EUR 19 million (USD 25.8m).

Over 38,000 people in rural and indigenous communities have benefited from micro and small facilities, such as solar, hydro, wind, biogas units and efficient heaters, EEP said yesterday.

The projects were developed in the last 10 years with support from Finland, Austria and the European Union.

EEP was launched in 2002 during the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It was first backed by Finland, while Austria joined in 2007.
