Dominican national energy commission CNE has signed a definitive concession contract with domestic power producer Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina SA (EGE Haina), granting it rights and permits to build an 80-MWp solar farm in the Dominican Republic.

The planned Sajoma solar farm will be located in the country’s central mountain range at an altitude of around 490 metres (1,608 ft) above sea level, where EGE Haina will install some 123,100 monocrystalline bifacial photovoltaic modules and power transmission infrastructure, CNE said on Friday.

Sajoma will become a solar farm located at the highest altitude in the Dominican Republic and the third largest plant of its kind in the country, following the first two that were also built by EGE Haina, according to the energy commission.

Once up and running, the Sajoma plant will be capable of generating some 148 GWh per year.

The project comes at a time when the Dominican Republic is experiencing a “renewables boom”, according to CNE executive director Edward Veras. There are currently 17 large-scale renewable energy projects under construction in the country, with 14 of them scheduled to become operational by the end of 2023, Veras said separately last week.

For EGE Haina, the Sajoma project is part of its strategy to boost the renewables capacity by 1,000 MW and gas capacity by 400 MW between 2020 and 2030, the company’s general manager Jose A. Rodriguez was quoted as saying in CNE’s statement.
