Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited, better known as Egenco, this week broke ground on a 10-MW solar power plant at Nanjoka in Salima district, central Malawi.

The ceremony was attended by the country’s energy minister Ibrahim Matola, who cut the ribbon and urged for further energy diversification.

The newly launched project is the first phase of a 20-MW solar plant development that will also incorporate an advanced battery storage system of 2.5 MWh. Egenco's acting CEO Maxon Chitawo said that the company has actually acquired enough land for up to 50 MW.

The 10-MW facility will require an investment of some USD 14 million (EUR 12.8m) and is expected to be completed within 18 months. Chint Electrical Co is the contractor for this project.
