Solar power plants in Egypt have generated 4,500 GWh of green electricity in 2021, the media centre of the Council of Ministers said over the weekend.

Solar sites have not been switched off because of low temperatures, the Cabinet said to refute rumours on social media that plants across the country were suspended due to the cold weather recently. All solar parks operate at full capacity throughout the year regardless of the weather temperature and various solar sites were built in places with strong sunshine on all days of the year, the statement noted.

Apart from solar, wind and hydropower are playing also a role in Egypt's plan to go green with wind turbines producing 5,400 GWh of electricity and hydropower plants contributing 14,000 GWh last year while biofuel projects generated 86 GWh.

The North African country seeks to raise the share of renewables to 42% by 2030 and recently unveiled several projects in the area of green hydrogen production.
