Egypt's solar, wind parks produce 12.5% more power in Q1

Wind farms and solar power plants across Egypt generated 2,109 GWh of electricity in the first three months of 2023 which is 12.5% more than a year earlier, the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) said in its latest report.

February witnessed the highest power generation from wind energy with 465 GWh produced. Overall, wind parks generated 1,042 GWh in January-March 2023.

Electricity production from solar energy amounted to 1,067 GWh in the first quarter of the year with March accounting for 408 GWh of the total.

The data shows also a 9% increase in the output of hydropower plants to 2,898 GWh in the three months.

NREA noted that the first pilot phase of a 100-MW green hydrogen plant in the industrial zone of Ain Sokhna close to the Suez Canal Economic Zone has been commissioned. The plant is expected to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen as a feedstock for up to 90,000 tons of green ammonia annually.
