Eku Energy commissions 40-MW battery site in England

Global energy storage developer Eku Energy has powered up its 40-MW/40-MWh Maldon battery energy storage system (BESS) in Essex, England, its first British project reaching commercial operations.

The facility will deliver ancillary and balancing services to support both the local and national grid, Eku Energy said, adding that its operations will help connect more renewable power generation and enhance the resilience of the UK electricity network.

Located on the outskirts of London, the Maldon BESS was installed by Trina Storage, in partnership with independent connection provider ESM Power Ltd. It will be run under a long-term Capacity Market contract, with the power to be traded by France’s EDF.

The Maldon battery is part of Eku Energy’s broader portfolio of British BESS projects. The company in July announced it was ready to start construction on two stand-alone battery storage projects totalling 130 MWh in the UK, where it has plans to further grow its footprint.
