El Salvador vice president Oscar Ortiz inaugurated yesterday a 101-MW solar power plant developed by French renewable energy company Neoen, in the department of La Paz.

The Providencia Solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant represents an investment of USD 151 million (EUR 138.1m) and is touted as the largest PV facility in Central America, vice president Ortiz said.

Comprised of 320,000 Trina Solar panels, Providencia Solar is expected to generate enough energy to meet the annual demand of 200,000 local homes, reported local media. Neoen won the project in a 2014 tender.

Back in January, American-Spanish company Real Infrastructure announced it had started construction on the 17.8-MW Trinidad y Marquez plant in the country. Also in the first month of the year, the National Energy Council (CNE) greenlighted 169.9 MW of solar and wind power supply contracts with 20-year term.
