Salvadorean state-owned hydro power producer Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) this week launched construction of a 17-MWp solar PV farm in the south-west part of El Salvador.

The project has the distinction of being El Salvador’s first state-owned solar power initiative -- from the design and planning to execution, CEL said.

The plant project is named Talnique Solar and is located in the town of Talnique in the La Libertad department. It will feature 29,600 bifacial solar panels.

CEL's subsidiary Inversiones Energeticas (INE) is executing the project with an investment of USD 20 million (EUR 20.2m). INE operates a thermal power plant in Talnique. With the solar project, INE is making a turn towards generation from clean and non-polluting sources, CEL added.

The Talnique Solar plant will be up and running in December 2023, according to the announcement.
