Elsewedy picked to build solar-plus-storage complex in Sudan

Egypt’s Elsewedy Electric (CAI:SWDY) will install a 20-MWp solar park with 35 MWh of battery storage capacity in Sudan under a deal with the local government.

The energy and infrastructure services provider said in a bourse filing on Tuesday it has sealed a turnkey contract with Sudan’s Ministry of Electricity, Dams, Irrigation and Water Resources for the project near the country’s capital city. The value is estimated at around USD 45 million (EUR 40.6m).

The solar-plus-storage complex near Sudan’s Nesitu County, around 20 km (12.4 miles) from Juba, is slated to begin operations by end-2020. Elsewedy Electric will carry out all engineering, procurement and installation activities, which will take around 12 months.

The scheme is being financed by the African Export-Import Bank. Once operational, the solar park will be able to produce around 29 million kWh of electricity, which will be enough to supply over 59,000 local homes each year. Its output will also help mitigate more than 12,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
