Employment in German renewable sector decreases in 2012

Aug 9, 2013 – The number of people employed in the German renewable sector fell by 3,560 on the year to 368,000 in 2012 as the boom in offshore wind power could not offset the decline in the photovoltaic (PV) segment.

The number of employed in the PV sector went down by 87,830 to 110,830, data released by the German Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS) showed. The biggest part of the job cuts were made in the states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, where the number of PV employed is the highest.

At the same time, the employed in the German wind energy sector grew by 16.6% to 117,860 thanks to growing demand on the global market and the continuing expansion of offshore wind energy.

The bio-energy sector also saw a peak in employment. The number of people working there rose to 106,240 in 2012 from 101,130 in 2011.
