Norway-based Empower New Energy AS last week announced a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 704-kWp rooftop solar power system in Ghana with local plastic manufacturing and recycling firm Miniplast Limited.

The impact fund manager, which invests in small and medium-scale renewable energy projects, will invest in the project through a Ghana-based project company majority owned by its fund, Empower Invest.

Sweden-based Stella Futura Ltd will install and operate the rooftop solar array to be located on the roofs of Miniplast's factories in the Spintex Industrial Area in the country's capital, Accra. The photovoltaic (PV) array, expected to become operational in July, will produce 1.1 GWh of power a year and save about 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually.

“We’re excited to install one of the largest industrial and commercial solar PV systems in Ghana. This project will not only lead to increased use of clean and reliable power, but it will also reduce our diesel consumption and lower our electricity costs," Miniplast's deputy managing director, Nadim Ghanem-Pares, commented.
