German electric utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (ETR:EBK) has launched the construction of an 87.6-MW solar park in the Brandenburg state of northeastern Germany.

The Gorlsdorf solar park is expected to generate enough electricity to supply 35,000 homes annually, once in operation, EnBW said on Thursday. The utility expects the construction works to be finalised at the end of next year.

The photovoltaic (PV) farm will be located in Vierlinden municipality, Markisch-Oderland district, within an area that was the scene of heavy fighting in 1945 and needed to be thoroughly cleaned from bombs and ammunition. Its operation is anticipated to bring annual revenues of around EUR 170,000 (USD 183,300) during its lifespan.

EnBW, which will run the complex by itself, plans to couple the PV park with a battery energy storage system of around 13.4 MWh.

EnBW currently owns and operates 1,046 MW of PV capacity and aims to reach 1.2 GW by 2025. The company in September secured seven solar parks with a combined capacity of 184 MW in Germany’s latest open-field solar auction.
