EnBW to install 100-MW energy storage facility in Germany

German electric utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (ETR:EBK) said on Monday that it will build a 100-MW/100-MWh battery storage system at its power plant site in Marbach, southern Germany.

The facility will be big enough to meet the electricity needs of around 12,500 households for 24 hours, the company said. The system will be connected to the transmission network operated by local grid company TransnetBW GmbH.

Construction works are scheduled to start in 2025 and the facility is expected to be operational by the end of the year. “It will be by far the largest battery storage facility in EnBW’s generation portfolio to date,” the company said.

The system will consist of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that contain no cobalt.

EnBW also plans further large-scale battery storage projects, the company’s battery system solutions head Arnim Wauschkuhn noted in the statement.

The latest news comes after the company launched earlier in November the construction of an 87.6-MW solar park in the Brandenburg state of northeastern Germany.
