Italy's Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) has commenced the construction of a 13.12-MW solar park in Panama's central province of Cocle.

The company, through Enel Green Power Panama (EGPP), said this week that the Jaguito plant is expected to be up and running in the first half of 2021.

The project is part of EGPP's USD-50-million (EUR 42.2m) PV investment plan for 2020-2021. Consisting of 32,130 monocrystalline photovoltaic (PV) modules, the plant is estimated to produce around 21.41 GWh of electricity annually, enough to avoid over 11,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.

On September 4, EGPP also announced it had secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) with state lender National Bank of Panama (Banconal) to supply 31 GWh of clean energy over five years.

According to the firm's website, EGPP has a combined capacity of 362 MW of solar and hydropower in Panama.
