Enel to supply renewable power to Chilean copper mine

Enel to supply renewable power to Chilean copper mine Enel Control Room Chile

Chilean copper producer Compania Minera Dona Ines de Collahuasi SCM has awarded in a tender a contract for the supply of 100% renewable power to Enel Generacion Chile.

The Chilean unit of Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said last week that the contract would run for ten years starting April 1, 2020.

The utility is to supply approximately 1 TWh per year of certified renewable electricity, allowing the Collahuasi mine to have a clean power mix.

The new contract also spells the termination of the previous one the miner had with Enel, which concerned the electricity supply from the Tarapaca coal-fired plant. The 158-MW unit of the plant is due to close shop in May 2020 as part of the recently announced Chilean coal phase-out.
