Italian utility group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) increased power production from clean and renewable sources across its global markets by 12.9% on the year to 126,985 GWh, according to the energy report the company released on Monday.

At the same time, the group’s installed renewable energy capacity, including all types of hydro, rose to 55,536 MW at the end of 2023 compared to 53,561 MW in the year-ago period. The installed battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity stood at 1,616 MW, up from 685 MW where it was at the end of 2022.

The share of renewables in Enel’s overall power production mix increased to 61.2% from 49.4% during the reporting period. At the end of 2023, renewables accounted for 68.2% of Enel’s total consolidated capacity, whereas a year ago, the renewables slice was 63.3%.

Looking at power production figures across Enel’s markets, the report shows that the renewables output rose in Italy (+20.7%), Iberia (+18.0%), Latin America (+14.7%) and North America (+9.5%).

Asset sales, divestment and shifting capacity from consolidated to managed in some markets explain lower renewable power production and installed capacity figures in those regions. This was the case for Enel’s Rest of Europe market where the renewables output fell by 12.5% year-on-year as 2023 figures were reported after the disposal of Enel Russia, Enel Green Power Romania, Enel Green Power Hellas, and 0.5 GW in Greece being shuffled off from consolidated to managed capacity.

The renewables output in the Africa, Asia and Oceania market dropped by 37.0% after around 1 GW moved from consolidated to managed following transactions in India and Australia, Enel said.

Selected figures from Enel’s 2023 energy bulletin are presented in the table below:

TECHNOLOGY: Global production in GWh: y/y change: Installed capacity at end-2023: y/y change:
Hydro 60,991 17.9% 28,340 MW 0%
Wind 45,339 4.8% 15,853 MW 0.7%
Solar & others 14,654 29.1% 10,413 MW 21.9%
Geothermal 6,001 -1.9% 931 MW 0.0%
