Enercon GmbH said that it has successfully installed the prototype of its new wind turbine model, the E-175 EP5, in Borchen-Etteln, Germany.

The commissioning of the 6.0-MW machine is underway.

The new turbine is designed for medium to light wind sites and offers a variety of features to optimise energy yield, such as a permanent magnet generator, multiple hybrid and steel tower options, and site-specific operational modes.

With a rotor diameter of 175 metres, the E-175 EP5 is one of the largest, most powerful and highest-yielding onshore turbines in Europe, Enercon said.

The German wind turbine maker is also developing a more powerful version of the E-175 EP5, which will use a separable permanent magnet generator with a rated output of 7.0 MW. The launch of this version is targeted for 2026.

The concept for the E-175 EP5 turbine was unveiled in September 2022, and according to Enercon’s CCO Uli Schulze Suedoff, the volume for 2025 has already been sold.

“We are also in concrete negotiations for numerous projects for the next 24 months -- and there are also further enquiries,” Schulze Suedoff said.
