Energie Steiermark of Austria launches biomass plant in Slovakia

Jun 4, 2014 - Austrian energy provider Energie Steiermark said on Tuesday it has opened a biomass cogeneration power plant in the town of Roznava in southeast Slovakia.

In cooperation with the city authorities, Energie Steiermark refurbished and fully upgraded an existing district heating system so that it now uses biomass instead of natural gas for heat production. The company has invested some EUR 9 million (USD 12.25m) in the plant, which will supply heat to the 20,000 residents of the town.

Energie Steiermark operates cogeneration plants in more than 20 cities in Slovakia, providing heat to over 200,000 people. Some 30% of the capacity uses biomass.

The company is Austria's fourth largest energy provider. Abroad, the utility employs some 250 people and generates an annual revenue exceeding EUR 100 million, it said.
