Enernet to build solar-based hybrid plant for uranium mine in Niger Uranium

Distributed energy service provider Enernet Global Inc will be building a hybrid power plant for a uranium mine in the Republic of Niger that requires 12 MW of consistent power.

Enernet said in a statement today that it has initiated early engineering for a facility that will include 16 MW of solar power generating capacity, 15 MW of battery energy storage, a 16-MW back-up diesel generator and advanced controls integrated with grid power from state-owned utility Sonichar.

This system is designed to cover about 35% of the power requirements of the Dasa project through which Global Atomic Corp (TSE:GLO) plans to produce uranium for nuclear power generation.

Enernet’s Johannesburg-based team is currently undertaking solution optimisation and equipment selection, as well as preliminary design and configuration of the Sonichar grid network connection. Construction work will begin once these activities are finalised in late 2022.

"We are excited to begin engineering works, with start-up generation scheduled in 2022 and the hybrid plant to be delivered in 2023,” said Matthew Silvester, Enernet's Director of Development for Africa.
