German renewables company Enertrag AG announced today a project to develop the Tambor Green Hydrogen Hub in Uruguay's department of Tacuarembo to produce large amounts of hydrogen and its derivatives.

Enertrag said that the first phase of the project will involve the construction of 350 MW of wind and solar farms, an on-site electrolyser and conversion facilities. The company expects to be able to produce some 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and convert it to e-methanol.

“The e-methanol produced here could compensate for around 10% of the methanol conventionally produced from Russian crude oil in Germany's largest refinery,” Enertrag said.

The company’s local partner is Montevideo-based green energy engineering firm SEG Ingenieria.

Uruguay’s green energy market is one of many scouted by Germany in its quest to find high-output green hydrogen exporters. According to Enertrag, Uruguay has the potential to produce hydrogen in the gigawatt scale and help Germany meet its entire demand for methanol.

“We want to support Uruguay's role as a pioneer in Latin America in the implementation of a green energy transition. Uruguay is an ideal partner for Europe and us with its high-quality energy resources, its stable regulatory and political framework as well as its vast experience in permitting and implementing large-scale renewable energy facilities”, commented Aram Sander, Head of Department International Project Development PtX at Enertrag.
