Engie inks 11-year PPA to power Chilean copper mine Wind farm in Chile. Author: Diego Correa.

Chilean mining company Minera Antucoya Ltda signed last week a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Engie Energia Chile SA to procure 100% renewable energy for its copper production.

The PPA will run for 11 years starting January 2022. Under the terms of the agreement, the Chilean unit of Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) will supply around 300 GWh per year. This will avoid annual emissions of approximately 134,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases, equivalent to removing 36,000 vehicles off the street each year.

The Antucoya mine, majority owned by Antofagasta Minerals SA, will become the mining group’s second copper operation after Zaldivar to run on 100% renewables. The group’s Los Pelambres mine already sources 59% of its total electricity from renewables.
