French energy group Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) announced on Monday it had commissioned two solar farms with a combined capacity of 60 MW in Senegal, alongside project partners French fund manager Meridiam and Senegalese wealth sovereign fund FONSIS.

The trio sponsored and executed the 35-MW Kahone Solaire SA and the 25-MW Kael Solaire SA projects, located in the Kaolack and Diourbel regions, respectively.

Both projects came out of the Scaling Solar initiative, a World Bank Group programme aimed at supporting governments in emerging markets to organise tenders and procurement of solar power. The Engie-Meridiam consortium secured Kahone and Kael in Senegal’s first Scaling Solar tender after placing bids of below EUR 0.04 (USD 0.049) per kilowatt-hour.

The two plants will operate under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with local electricity company Senelec.

Engie and Meridiam each hold a 40% stake in the project company managing the concession, while FONSIS owns the remaining 20%.

The three parties are also partners in Senergy and the Ten Merina solar plants in Senegal, which with Kahone and Kael, represent more than 50% of the country's solar power capacity. The four solar farms have a combined capacity of 120 MW, Engie said.
