French utility group Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) has inaugurated a 57-MW wind and solar power hybrid facility in Braila county, eastern Romania, the group’s Romanian unit announced on Wednesday.

The complex, situated in the Gemenele commune, became a hybrid when Engie Romania finalised the installation of a 9.3-MWp solar photovoltaic plant next to its existing wind farm with a capacity of 47.5 MW.

The company assembled the new plant on a 14-hectare (34.6 acres) site using 17,100 bifacial photovoltaic panels mounted on metal trackers.

Now connected to the same grid point, the Gemenele wind and solar farm have become one of the first hybrid renewable power plants in Romania and the first hybrid for Engie in the country, the Romanian subsidiary said. The wind and solar combination will generate around 140 GWh of electricity per year, enough to cover the annual consumption of over 46,800 households.

The new project raised Engie Romania’s installed wind and solar power capacity in the country to 211 MW.
