Paris-based telecoms company The iliad Group has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with French utility group Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) to buy the generation of the Labrit solar farm located in the Landes region in southwestern France.

The 15-year off-site PPA also covers the associated guarantees of origin. The 60,000-panel solar park is expected to produce more than 20 GWh of electricity per year, enough to cover the network usage of more than 1 million of iliad’s subscribers in France, according to an announcement today.

The capacity of the solar farm is 16 MW based on information on the website of services company Synapsun, which supplied modules for the project.

The telecoms provider said it picked Engie, its long-standing energy supplier, for its first PPA in France. The deal is in line with its target to source at least 20% of its electricity supply in France via PPAs by 2035. The company is looking to support renewables capacity in the three countries where it operates - France, Italy and Poland.

“This PPA we’ve signed with ENGIE is a first important step, symbolising our determination to secure the cost and quality of our power supply while at the same time demonstrating the practical support we are currently giving to help develop the renewable energy industry in France, and which we will soon also be giving in Italy and Poland,” said iliad chief executive Thomas Reynaud.
