Engie starts commercial operation of 260-MW wind farm in Peru

Engie Energia Peru SA, part of French energy utility group Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), has recently launched commercial operation of its 260-MW Punta Lomitas wind farm in Peru’s Ica region, and plans to soon start up its 36.4-MW expansion, it said.

The wind farm is equipped with 50 turbines, two substations and 60 kilometres (37.6 miles) of transmission lines that connect it to the national grid. The expansion features seven turbines.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through its private sector arm IDB Invest, supported the construction of the Punta Lomitas project with a loan for up to USD 300 million (EUR 275.2m). The amount included resources mobilised from Dutch development bank FMO for USD 100 million and French lender BNP Paribas for USD 55 million, IDB Invest reminded this week.

The operation of the Punta Lomitas wind farm will benefit the Quellaveco copper mine project in southern Peru. In 2021, the mine’s majority owner Anglo American Plc (LON:AAL) signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Engie Energia Peru to secure some of the output from the wind farm for the mining operations at Quellaveco.
