Engie tie-up inks 60 MW of solar PPAs in Senegal

French utility Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) and its partners in 60 MW of solar projects in Senegal have signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with local electricity company Senelec.

The partners, among which is investor and asset manager Meridiam, will be selling electricity from the two photovoltaic (PV) projects for 25 years, Engie said on Thursday. They secured the particular projects in April in a solar tender conducted under the World Bank Group's Scaling Solar programme.

Engie and Meridiam placed the winning bids of EUR 0.0380 (USD 0.431) per kWh for a PV project in Kahone, Kaolack region, and EUR 0.0398 per kWh for a project in Touba, Diourbel. The EUR 0.0380/kWh proposal was the lowest one in the tender.

According to the press release, Engie will be in charge of building and operating the solar farms. This will be the French firm’s first independent power producer (IPP) initiative in Senegal, which is working on the addition of 200 MW of utility-scale solar power projects under the World Bank programme.
