Engie Energy Access, an Africa-focused arm of French energy major Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), announced today the start of construction works on 15 solar mini-grids in Zambia.

The sites are being built in the country’s Eastern Province. The company’s unit MySol Grid Zambia is in charge of the construction, ownership, operation and maintenance of the systems.

The off-grid installations, which will provide reliable electricity to underserved families and small businesses, are expected to become operational by the end of the year.

The projects are part of the Increase Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production (IAEREP) programme which is funded by the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) and the European Union (EU), a press statement said.

Engie Energy Access seeks to deploy 60 solar mini-grids across five provinces in Zambia under the IAEREP by 2025. The projects will be funded through a USD-7.5-million (EUR 7.00m) debt facility arranged by MySol Grid Zambia with Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI), managed by Cygnum Capital, in 2023.
