Engie Energia Peru SA, part of French energy utility group Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), has inaugurated its 26.5-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Lima region.

The facility, known as Chilca-BESS, is made up of 84 cabinets of lithium-ion batteries. Now in commercial operation, it is the largest energy storage system of its kind in Peru, according to the Peruvian ministry of energy and mining.

Engie Energia Peru invested USD 18.3 million (EUR 17.1m) in the Chilca-BESS project. The power producer situated the BESS at its ChilcaUno gas-fired power plant to provide primary frequency regulation, the ministry said.
