Eni to build 50-MWp solar park in Angola

Italian oil and gas major Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) and the Angolan government have signed a concession agreement for a 50-MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) park to be installed in Angola’s Namibe province.

Eni said it will build the project through Solenova Ltd, its renewable energy joint venture (JV) with Angolan state-controlled peer Sonangol.

The solar park will be constructed in two 25-MWp phases and connected to the grid in the south of the country.

“The implementation of the first phase of the 25 MWp project will allow a reduction in diesel consumption estimated at around 13,500 cubic metres per year, reducing electricity production costs and greenhouse gas emissions by around 20,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year”, Eni said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Italian company has been present in Angola since 1980. This June, it signed a heads of agreement with Sonangol to create Solenova. Eni then said that the first order of business for the JV would be the phased development of the 50-MWp solar park.
