Solenova, a joint venture (JV) between Italian oil and gas major Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) and Angolan state-controlled peer Sonangol, has laid the first stone for a 25-MW solar plant in the southwestern African nation.

The solar park is the first phase of the 50-MW Caraculo photovoltaic (PV) project that will be located in Angola’s southwestern Namibe province, Eni announced on Friday.

Once in operation, the Caraculo PV facility will produce green electricity that will be fed into the southern territory grid to help the local community reduce its diesel consumption, cut emissions and diversify its energy mix.

Italian oil multinational Saipem SpA (BIT:SPM) is heading the construction work on the project.

Formed in 2019, Solenova has the goal to assess and develop renewable energy projects in Angola andd the phased development of Caraculo is its first business opportunity.
