Swedish renewables developer Eolus Vind AB (STO:EOLU-B) has signed a letter of intent with Volvo Car AB (STO:VOLCAR-B) to supply the carmaker with “significant amounts of electricity” from its Vastvind offshore wind project off the coast of Gothenburg.

Volvo is looking to source the energy for its operations at Hisingen in Gothenburg, including the new battery factory being constructed through a joint venture with Northvolt.

Eolus submitted a permit application for the Vastvind project in July. Construction work is aimed to start in 2027, with completion planned in 2029.

Volvo Cars wants to exclusively offer fully electric cars by 2030 and strives to reduce the carbon footprint of the entire lifecycle of the car. “By committing to electricity from offshore wind power outside Hisingen, we want to secure our access to locally produced, renewable electricity at a reasonable cost,” said Johan Lannering, head of strategic collaborations at the company.

According to Eolus chief executive Per Witalisson, offshore wind power has a critical role in meeting the growing need for electricity production in western Sweden as the region has the ambition to become a centre for electrified vehicles, battery manufacturing and climate-smart port logistics.

Gothenburg Port Authority owns 5% of the Vastvind project.
