E.on charters ship for building offshore wind parks

(ADPnews) - Jun 30, 2011 - German utility E.on (ETR:EOAN) said on Wednesday its renewables unit has chartered a vessel for the construction of offshore wind parks from Dutch shipping company Vroon.

The MPI Discovery specialised ship belongs to Vroon's British subsidiary MPI Offshore Ltd and has been chartered for six years. E.on will use the vessel to build offshore wind farms in Europe. MPI Discovery can work in particularly harsh weather conditions, which allows for a significant reduction of the time and cost of offshore wind park construction, E.on said.

The ship can operate in water depths of up to 40 metres (131 feet) and its main crane can lift up to 1,000 tonnes.

E.on has offshore wind projects with an overall capacity of 4,000 MW in its pipeline. The company already operates five offshore parks totalling almost 500 MW in capacity. It is currently working on the London Array offshore project using another vessel of MPI.
