Infener to set up 20-MW green hydrogen hub in Germany
Sep 17, 2024 14:59 CESTE.ON Hydrogen, part of German energy company E.ON SE (ETR:EOAN), plans to install an electrolyser with a capacity of around 20 MW to help meet the hydrogen needs of mobility and the industry in the Rhine-Ruhr region in Germany.
The project in the city of Essen is being developed in response to the growing demand for sustainable energy in Rhine-Ruhr, E.ON Hydrogen said on Tuesday.

The planned electrolyser is expected to produce up to 2,300 tonnes of hydrogen annually, using renewable energy. The hydrogen will be filled into containers via filling stations and transported to end customers in the Rhine-Ruhr region by truck. Production is expected to begin in 2027.
Via the green hydrogen from the facility, companies in the region will be able to save up to 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Additionally, the waste heat from the plant will be fed into the local district heating network.
E.ON Hydrogen also plans to build a public hydrogen refuelling station for heavy duty vehicles and cars just 300 metres from the electrolyser. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has already approved financing of EUR 2.3 million (USD 2.54m) for the project.
“The planned electrolyser and hydrogen refuelling station will help us to achieve our targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in industry and heavy-duty transportation,” E.ON Hydrogen managing director Gabriël Clemens noted in the statement.
Synergies are also expected from hydrogen pipeline projects of local utility Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (EVV).
