Solar Era Holdings in Sierra Leone is seeking an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a 5-MW solar power project, with submissions due by June 16.

This is the first phase of a two-phase project, the feasibility study for which has been financed by a grant from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). Idaho-based firm Power Engineers Inc was selected to conduct the feasibility study, which is currently in progress.

The 5-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) park will be built near Bo, the second largest city in Sierra Leone. In phase two, Solar Era Holdings plans to build a 20-MW-plus PV-diesel hybrid power plant nearby, with battery storage capacity.

The project developer is 100% owned by Africa Growth Energy Solutions.

The USTDA support for the project is in line with the US government's Power Africa initiative to increase electricity access across sub-Saharan Africa. Only about 13% of the population in Sierra Leone has access to electricity.
