ABP presents plan to turn Port of Barrow into renewables hub
Sep 18, 2024 14:41 CESTEssar Energy Transition (EET), a business of Indian conglomerate Essar Group, on Friday said it will develop Europe’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant (CHP) at its Stanlow oil refinery in North West England.
The project is called EET Hydrogen Power and is targeted to be operating by 2027. The new plant will be built in two phases to reach a capacity of 125 MW of power with 6,000 tonnes per day of steam. It will replace Stanlow’s existing 50 MW of boiler units, which generate power for the refinery operations, as part of the refinery’s ambition to cut total emissions by 95% by 2030 and to become the world’s lowest carbon refinery.

“We have bold ambitions for Stanlow to become a low carbon transition hub at the centre of the HyNet Industrial Cluster. EET Hydrogen Power will be Europe’s first 100% hydrogen-ready gas-turbine plant which will be supplied with EET Hydrogen’s low carbon hydrogen,” said Rob Wallace, chief executive officer of EET Hydrogen Power.
EET Hydrogen is developing over 1.35 GW of blue and green hydrogen capacity for the UK market, with ambitions for more.
EET now includes EET Hydrogen Power, EET Hydrogen, EET Fuels, which is the owner of the Stanlow refinery, and Stanlow Terminals Ltd.
EET Hydrogen Power is part of EET’s USD 3 billion (EUR 2.76bn) of energy transition investments in the North West of England.
