The Estonian Ministry of Climate has given the thumbs up to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) associated with Enefit Green's (TAL:EGR1T) proposal to build a 1-GW offshore wind park in the Baltic Sea.

The positive decision to the North-Western Estonian project’s EIA report allows the project to move forward, Enefit Green said on Wednesday.

The renewable energy arm of energy group Eesti Energia kicked off the environmental assessment in 2006 and since then has conducted various studies to estimate the proposed wind farm’s impact and take mitigation measures.

The North-Western Estonian park will be installed 12 km (7.5 miles) off the country’s Hiiumaa Island and is expected to produce roughly 4 TWh of electricity with up to 60 turbines. It will become operational in the 2030s, at the earliest.

The offshore project, previously known as Hiiu, was initiated by Nelja Energia back in 2006. The company was acquired by Enefit Green in 2018.

Estonia aims at sourcing 100% of its power from renewables by the end of the decade and becoming climate neutral by 2050.
