EU-funded PV power plant opens in Rwanda - report

Oct 7, 2011 - A 2.4 MW photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant developed with funding from the European Union (EU) has been opened in Rwanda, African news agency PANA reported yesterday, citing official sources in Kigali.

The plant will produce enough electricity to power eight secondary schools in southeastern Rwanda. It is part of a larger project to electrify a number of isolated schools in Rwanda, EU delegation in Kigali informed PANA.

According to the news agency, the government of Rwanda has invested in the diversification of its energy sources. Renewable energy is expected to meet some 60% of the country's energy consumption by 2020.
