EU opens new call for PCI, PMI energy infrastructure projects
Sep 18, 2024 15:49 CESTA total of 28 innovative clean energy projects have been selected to receive EUR 3.2 million (USD 3.9m) in financial, technical and legal assistance under the NESOI facility that was launched by the European Commission to support islands in driving the energy transition.
Almost all of the winning projects involve renewable energy production, mostly from solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, but also wind, pumped hydro and tidal energy.
The awardees include two projects from the Baltic region, five from the Atlantic, seven from the West Mediterranean and 14 from the East Mediterranean. They are spread across 40 EU islands in 10 countries. Combined, these projects are expected to generate nearly EUR 1 billion in investments from a wide range of stakeholders.
NESOI is a Horizon2020 project set up in 2019. The consortium of partners behind it includes E.on Innovation, which alone will support six of the projects spread across 14 European islands, the company said. E.on Innovation explained that its role is to evaluate how the existing network infrastructure of these islands can cope with the anticipated high adoption of renewables.
The second call for applications will open this autumn and interested parties will have the chance to file project ideas until December 2021. The second selection will be announced in the spring of 2022.
