The European Union (EU) and Kazakhstan today established a partnership on the development of a secure and sustainable supply of raw materials and refined materials, as well as of renewable hydrogen and battery value chains.

The European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Kazakh prime minister, Alikhan Smailov, at COP27 in Egypt.

The pact outlines the two sides’ intention to identify joint projects in raw materials, batteries and renewable hydrogen, modernise mining and refining processes, and seek to decarbonise the critical raw materials value chain through the use of renewable energy and digitalisation.

For this purpose, the EU and Kazakhstan will develop a Roadmap for the period 2023-2024, with concrete joint actions to be agreed within six months.

According to the announcement, EC President von der Leyen will sign a similar partnership agreement tomorrow with the President of Namibia, Hage Geingob.
