EU, Namibia plan MoU on green hydrogen - report

A green hydrogen deal between the EU and Namibia is possibly coming as Europe wants to wean itself off Russian fuels and the African country to harness its wind and solar potential to generate hydrogen, Reuters reported on Monday.

According to an EU official cited by the news agency, the parties plan to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on hydrogen and minerals at the UN Climate Change Conference that will take place in November in Egypt. Obeth Kandjoze, director-general of Namibia's National Planning Commission, confirmed for Reuters that work was ongoing for a deal on green hydrogen, without commenting on minerals.

The European Commission would not comment on a potential agreement, although it said it was working on projects for green hydrogen in Namibia, according to the article.

Under the REPowerEU plan, the EU aims to produce 10 million tonnes and import another 10 tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.

Germany has already unveiled a green hydrogen partnership with Namibia.
