The European Union (EU) has signed today a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with Japan in an effort to establish a rules-based and transparent global market for both renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.

An announcement from the European Commission notes that the cooperation will focus on sustainable and affordable production, trade, transport, storage, distribution and use of hydrogen.

The MoC provides a framework for detailed proposals in relation to the development of programmes for cooperation. The areas in which the two sides will work together include: policies, regulations, incentives and subsidies; best practices and know-how; project development; and training and education, among others.

Both the EU and Japan have set the long-term ambition of becoming climate-neutral by 2050.
