Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg starts operations of own wind turbine

Aug 15, 2013 - Germany's Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg officially started yesterday electricity production through an own wind turbine, targeting to cover 25-50% of its energy needs.

The terminal expects to reduce energy costs in the medium to long term and become more independent of price developments in the power and energy markets, Eurogate said yesterday.

The wind turbine, produced by German Nordex (ETR:NDX1), has a capacity of 2.4 MW. It will contribute a CO2 saving of 4,600 tonnes per year, according to Eurogate.

The terminal operator is also building a combined heating and power (CHP) plant in Hamburg which is scheduled to be operational by January 2014.

The wind turbine and CHP plant will together meet two thirds of the container terminal's total electricity requirement.

Eurogate is pursuing an environmental strategy, aimed at lowering of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per container by 25% by 2020.
