Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) said on Thursday that its 495-MW Buffalo Plains wind farm injected first power into the grid in Alberta, Canada.

The wind farm is still under construction and currently has more than a third of its 83 turbines in place. CIP expects the remaining installation work to be finalised in the fourth quarter of 2024, followed by a full grid connection.

The Buffalo Plains project broke ground in November 2023, while the first turbine was installed in April 2024.

The project brought together Siemens Gamesa as the wind turbine supplier, Canada’s Borea Construction as the building contractor, and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) as the off-taker. The US technology and e-commerce company signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with CIP to procure 415 MW worth of generation from Buffalo Plains to power its Canadian data centre and logistics operations.

The project is being delivered on behalf of CIP’s Copenhagen Infrastructure IV (CI IV) fund. Once up and running, Buffalo Plains will be the largest onshore wind farm constructed in Canada, boasting an ability to power around 240,000 households in Alberta province, the Danish investor said.
