Five Canon printing business sites move to 100% renewable power

Japanese optics expert Canon Inc (TYO:7751) has converted 100% of the power used by five of the manufacturing sites for its printing business to renewable energy, a unit of the company announced recently.

Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) said in a press statement that renewable energy now covers the equivalent to the fiscal year 2023 electricity consumption of five locations among the four companies that make the mainstay products of its printing business, namely Canon Suzhou Inc, Canon Vietnam Co Ltd (Thang Long Factory and Tien Son Factory), Canon Hi-Tech Thailand Ltd (Ayutthaya Factory), and Canon Prachinburi Thailand Ltd. The products made by those businesses include office multifunctional devices, home inkjet printers, and large-format inkjet printers.

So far, Canon has installed photovoltaic (PV) panels within the grounds of some factories, including the Thang Long Factory in Vietnam, where around 18% of the entire plant’s power comes from solar. However, the full conversion of the five plants in question was achieved through renewable energy certificates (RECs).

Taking into consideration both methods, the company has increased the percentage of renewable energy usage in 2023 at all of its final assembly sites for printing products by 5.8 percentage points on the year to approximately 39.5%.

This year, Canon intends to install even more PV panels and increase the usage rate of renewable energy, it said.
