Japanese electric utility Electric Power Development Co Ltd (TYO:9513), known as J-POWER, announced today the Floating Offshore Wind Technology Research Association (FLOWRA) has been launched.

The association is based on a partnership with several other local companies and focuses on developing technologies to reduce the costs and risks of commercialising floating offshore wind power generation in Japan.

FLOWRA is looking to achieve large-scale commercialisation of floating offshore wind power generation and create a domestic industry.

J-Power noted that its part in the association is to research "technological developments for the social implementation of floating offshore wind power generation".

Other members in the association include NTT Anode Energy Corporation; The Kansai Electric Power Co Inc; Kyuden Mirai Energy Company Incorporated; Cosmo Eco Power Co Ltd; JERA Co Inc; Chubu Electric Power Co Inc; Tokyo Gas Co Ltd; TEPCO Renewable Power, Incorporated; Tohoku Electric Power Co Inc; Hokuriku Electric Power Company; Marubeni Offshore Wind Development Corporation; Mitsubishi Corporation Offshore Wind Ltd and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation.
