Four cos to build Uganda’s first 20 MW of PV

Dec 11, 2014 - Uganda’s Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) today said the country has given clearance to four companies to develop its first 20 MW of solar projects, to be located in the country's eastern parts.

The two 10-MW solar systems will be located in the districts of Soroti and Tororo. They are expected to require a total investment of USD 32.5 million (EUR 26.1m).

Yesterday Dubai-based solar power developer Access Power MEA said it has won the bid to construct one of the 10 MWp solar farms. The company will work in a consortium with Spain's TSK Electronica y Electricidad SA. They aim to secure the USD 17 million of needed financing by June next year.

The other USD-15.50 million solar park will be built by a consortium of Italy’s Building Energy Spa and Uganda's Simba Telecom Ltd.

The solar projects will participate in the GET feed-in-tariff (FiT) Solar Facility incentive programme, which is managed by Germany’s KfW Development Bank and financed by the European Union (EU) Infrastructure Trust Fund. Their output will be sold at an average rate of USD 0.1637 per every kWh over the next 20 years, while the locals will pay only USD 0.11 of it.

Uganda is set to expand its whole renewable industry and the government is making efforts to attract. Currently most of its power comes from HPPs, but electricity demand, is accelerating by 10% each year.
