Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTApr 3, 2012 - The French government announced on Tuesday the withdrawal a permit for the construction of three wind turbines off the Brittany coast, 22 km from the emblematic island of Mont Saint-Michel.
The government justified its decision with concerns that the wind farms can spoil the unique view of the island, included in UNESCO's list of world heritage since 1979.
The state together with the regions of Brittany and Lower Normandy will introduce an exclusive area near the island by September after UNESCO gives its opinion in June. The exclusive area will be between 20 km and 40 km around the island.
The project had to be implemented by wind power specialist Epuron. The company gave its approval for the suspension of the construction process.
