French energy group Engie (EPA:ENGI) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with venture capital firm Devenco to explore possibilities in Cambodia’s solar power sector, the Khmer Times reports.

According to a post on the Facebook page of Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment, the two companies are looking to build a solar plant with a capacity of 30 MW to 50 MW in Kampong Chhnang province. However, ministry spokesperson Victor Jona told the newspaper that Kampong Chhnang is just one of several locations that are being considered. The project has not been confirmed yet.

Jona said, as cited by Khmer Times, that the pair is currently studying the country’s legal framework for the solar sector and is looking forward to discussing an offtake deal with Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC). If that deal is signed, construction could begin next year, he added.

In turn, Kampong Chhnang governor Chhour Chandoeun told the newspaper that he has no knowledge of the project, but would welcome it.
