German vertical bifacial photovoltaics developer Next2Sun AG has commenced the construction of what it says is the world's largest large-scale vertical PV system on airport grounds at Frankfurt Airport.

The facility will have a total capacity of 17.4 MWp and its solar panels will be installed in a 30.8-hectare area over a length of 2,800 metres parallel to the western runway. Next2Sun is not only supplying the PV system but also taking care of the project implementation as the plant builder, a press release says.

The large-scale project was preceded by the deployment of an 8.4-kWp demonstration system to test the technology onsite.

Next2Sun notes that with its vertical PV system “hardly any surface is sealed,” which allows for the preservation of ecologically valuable meadow areas.
